Fifth Continent
“The world, according to the best geographers, is divided into Europe, Asia, Africa, America and Romney Marsh”. - The Ingoldsby Legends
The Fifth Continent Landscape Partnership Scheme is worth £2.3m and will target 28,000ha of the Romney Marsh, representing 86% of the Romney Marshes Living Landscape (242km2). The Heritage Lottery Fund is supporting the scheme to the tune of £1.8m.
The Scheme will provide everyone with a chance to acknowledge, strengthen, protect and celebrate all that makes this unique landscape so important. Together we will implement plans that will restore, re-create and enhance built and natural heritage features across Romney Marsh. Rare vegetated shingle will be studied, and waterways will be made even more valuable for biodiversity. Bees will be encouraged through the development of green networks of wildflowers, and more people will be involved in monitoring locally important wildlife.
People will rediscover their landscape and heritage through events, trails and leaflets. Children will enjoy indoor and outdoor lessons highlighting the environment on their doorstep.
